About the role
The ever-advancing world of digital opens up exciting opportunities for us here at ONS. It enables us to better engage with and inform our customers, to develop more relevant and targeted products and increase our audience reach and their understanding of what we do. As an organisation currently working at the forefront of open data, we need to ensure that the vast quantities of open data we produce are continually accessible, re-usable and understandable. As Open Data Technical Manager, you’ll work at the heart of open data, ensuring that we remain a key partner within this area of development.
Leading the provision of technical guidance and advocacy for users of ONS open data and APIs, you’ll compile a range of materials for a quick, concise reference on how to access and use ONS data. From answering queries on online forums such as GitHub and Stackoverflow, to publishing content on the ONS digital blog, you’ll advise and inform the community of developments in open data and promote its usage. Regularly attending conferences and hack days, you’ll have the opportunity to answer queries and interact with users face-to-face. Ultimately you’ll represent ONS in all elements of open data from offering support, to driving the service forward across the open data community.
A dynamic self-starter, you’re passionate about open data and APIs, with a robust technical knowledge and understanding of both. With an established presence in the developer/open data community, you’re able to confidently present at conferences and interact with users on a face-to-face basis. You’ll have experience in modern development languages; ideally you’ll also have a some knowledge of SDMX, although this isn’t essential.
Here at ONS, we are the UK’s largest producer of official statistics. We produce the data which shapes and informs the nation and economic statistics are of vital importance within the UK. From macroeconomic statistics on GDP to those relating to income and wealth distributions and inflation, we produce a vast range of economic statistics that enable government, businesses and the wider public to make informed, credible decisions.
